I take references from nature and from a whole variety of ephemera to compose narratives in my painting. Personal interest in places, Classic cars and popular iconography feature largely in my work and I often choose dogs to slip into the role of alter ego. Found objects hold a great attraction for me, replacing the usual supports of wood or canvas. They carry a history and can sometimes dictate my choice of subject matter. In printmaking, I often use found objects to print from, for all their curious scratch marks and surfaces.
Having been a lecturer in printmaking for many years at London Universities, I am now based in Bristol where I am Associate Senior Teacher in drawing at the University of Bristol Botanic Garden with Pupgroup (Pick Up a Pencil group), a drawing group I established in 2012, to encourage the rejection of hackneyed drawing habits and to study from a unique botanical collection to improve skills and develop a drawing identity.
