My chosen medium will depend on my subject. I work with print, photography, ceramic and paint. The core of my work comes from constantly drawing. Old sketchbooks are treasures to browse as they capture the moment, the sounds and the scents.
I like feeling spaces and places for my work. I currently have an installation called ‘Silent Bells’ ( 30 bells made of porcelain) hanging in Bristol Cathedral in the side Berkeley Chapel. I also have five paintings hanging in the waiting lounge of Bath Spa station, and a large drawing is permanently hanging at Arnos Vale cemetry.
I am a musician (singer, trombone and sackbut player – a small trombone), and this has a strong influence on my work. I have been performing early music, particularly Monteverdi and Gabrieli, in St Mark’s, The Friary and the Scola de Musica in Venice. I try to incorporate what I hear into my work, as sound is so embedded in all that I do.
Having played music many times in Venice, I have produced a body of work entitled ‘Sounds of Venice’ I have used a variety of media for this – lithograph, photograph, charcoal drawing and paint. Each work captures a particular sound – or silence.
