Plastic plays an enormous role in our lives. We treat it as a throw away commodity even though it is a permanent material. This does not make sense!
I recently watched a beautiful but disturbing film about the impact of plastic on a natural bird sanctuary in the middle of the Pacific where ?tens of thousands of baby albatrosses lie dead on the ground, their bodies filled with plastic from the Pacific Garbage Patch.? Midway: trailer: a film by Chris Jordan http://www.midwayfilm.com/
This film made me determined to find out more about plastic and in particular the impact it has on our marine environment, and how it ultimately leaches into the whole food chain. It has made me think about how I can make a difference but highlighted how difficult that is. Our lives are deeply intertwined with plastic, from the obvious plastic bags and water bottles to the ?innocent? cosmetic bottle to the plastic pen etc etc ad infinitum.
Another video which made an impact on me is this: http://vimeo.com/8177268 It shows how ?our oceans are becoming a planetary soup laced with plastic?. My current pieces of work are heavily influenced by this video.
